Responsible Car Care

Do you remember what it felt like the first time you were left with your own car? I remember just feeling so happy and free, and so I decided to try to help my own teenagers get a car of their own. However, after we found the right cars to buy, it was immediately clear that they needed to learn how to take care of their vehicles. In addition to talking with them about regular maintenance, I also started focusing with my kids to figure out a routine maintenance schedule that would help. They were great to work with, and now I can honestly say that their cars are beautiful inside and out.

2 Problems Caused By Misalignment Of Your Car's Wheels

by Bessie Fox

While driving down the road, you may have noticed that your car tends to pull one way or the other, especially if you loosely let go of the steering wheel. If so, this is a sign that your wheels are no longer in alignment. While you may believe that you can adjust your driving to compensate for the pulling, there are a couple of other problems of which you should be aware that can happen when there is a misalignment of your car's wheels.

1.  Tires Wear Down Faster

One of the more noticeable problems that is caused by a misalignment of your car's wheels is that the tires wear down faster. When your wheels are in alignment, the tread of the tires meets the road evenly. Not only does this put the same amount of pressure on the tread so that the entire surface creates friction with the road to hold your car, but it also allows for even wear.

However, when your wheels are misaligned, portions of the tires will have more pressure on them, which is usually the outer edges. As a result, these areas wear down faster as well as make it more difficult for the tires to adhere to the pavement.

To keep driving safely, you would need to replace your tires more often. However, if the wheels are still not in alignment, the same issue will continue to present itself.

2.  Car's Fuel Efficiency Suffers Greatly

Along with causing your tires' tread to wear down faster, wheel misalignment can also affect your car's fuel efficiency. When the wheels are rotating evenly, the number of miles per gallon that you get from a tank of gas stays consistent.

However, because a wheel alignment causes the tires to drag on the pavement, the engine has to work harder to make them rotate. Since the engine is working harder, it must use up more gas, resulting in decreased gas mileage. If the misalignment is not corrected, you will find that you have less time between fill-ups at the gas station because your car is using up so much fuel.

If you suspect that your car's wheels are no longer aligned, do not ignore the issue as this would open up your vehicle to the problems above. Take your car to an automotive shop like D Wells Automotive Service that offers wheel alignment services. They can verify the misalignment and take the steps necessary to readjust the wheels.
